Houston Texans Plan Pre-game Protest

The Houston Texans are planning a pre-game protest before today’s game! Unless you have been living underneath a rock, you have heard about the huge stir in the NFL due to some racists and degrading comments Houston Texans’ owner, Bob McNair made about the players in the league. You may or may not be aware of the fact that when those statements were made public, DeAndre Hopkins, the Texans star wide receiver walked out of practice.

Since the story first broke, there has been a great deal of anticipation to see how the players would respond on game day. The latest word is that the players have played a unified pre-game protest to air their disgust, and I must say that I am immensely disappointed in the response, but I am not at all surprised. The players are the product that drives the entire brand of the NFL, without them the NFL becomes a brand in search of a product, and we found out how that ends up when the NFL players went on strike in the 1980s.

It is time for the players, especially Black players to make their presence felt, not through the voicing of disgust through symbolic protest, but through withdrawing that which has value (themselves) from the control and benefit of the NFL owners and the league in general. While the symbolic gesture of protesting may bring a heightened level of awareness, I would argue that most people know whether they are willing to admit it or not.

At some point, we have to be willing to stop attempting to negotiate and reason with those who are intent on being unreasonable. There comes a point in which you must take what belongs to you by force — by any means necessary! This is your right, even more, it is your responsibility.

We are laying the foundation for our progeny with every step we take and every breath we breathe. Will be leaving them a better situation than what we inherited, or will be leaving them our mess to clean up — much in the same way our parents left their unsettled business for us to manage?

We are beyond the point of symbolism! Unless you are planning on withdrawing and withholding that which benefits your oppressor — the Black Dollar — your protests are empty and void of power, being tantamount to a collective temper tantrum! The time has come to weaponize the Black Dollar! ~ Rick Wallace, Ph.D., Psy.D.
