These Two Black Congressmen Supporting Rahm Emanuel Amid Police Shootings

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is fighting for his political life amid accusations of corruption and concealing evidence about police shootings. The mayor’s fighting for his job, but he’s not doing going it alone. Two African-American congressmen are working to help Emanuel save his job.

As the Chicago Tribune reported, African-American Congressmen Bobby Rush and Danny Davis are helping the mayor reduce tensions in the black community.

Both lawmakers appeared in support of a project designed to provide jobs for ex-inmates. Rush commended Emanuel on repairing a train line that runs through a mostly black community.

“The one thing I’m very, very proud of, in terms of the Emanuel administration, is the Chicago Transit Authority, because I’ve worked with them on the whole Red Line renovation,” Rush said. “That was very positive for my community, all right?”

Davis also gushed with pride of Emanuel’s accomplishments on behalf of the black community.

“In politics, you make use of every opportunity. It would have been very difficult for me to say I’m not in agreement with expanding the ex-offender re-entry program when I passed national legislation in 2007 called Second Chance, and when we just re-authorized funding for it a few weeks ago before we left,” he said, according to the Tribune.

The Chicago Police Department has been under fire for quite some time amid allegations of everything from corruption to “black sites”, but the release of video from the Laquan McDonald shooting was a tipping point.

McDonald was jogging in the middle of the street when officer Jason Van Dyke opened fire on him. Even after McDonald hit the ground, Van Dyke kept unloading. In the initial police report, Van Dyke said McDonald lunged at him, but the dash cam video proved that statement untrue.

Now, according to a report by The Daily Beast, the cover-up of the McDonald video goes all the way to the mayor’s office:

Not only do the emails show the effort to cover up what really happened to Laquan McDonald went to the top of the Emanuel administration, they also show the mayor’s office was pulling strings at the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA), which, as its name indicates, should be independent.

A day after the settlement was approved, Emanuel’s deputy communications director complained to his staff that an IPRA spokesperson did not report to him before speaking to a New York Times reporter.

If the mayor survives this scandal, it’ll be in large part because some black elected officials defended him against accusations from both their constituencies.
