Derrick Jaxn the Self-Love Ambassador

We live in a culture in which people gravitate toward those who tell them what they want to hear rather than tell them what they so desperately need to hear. We don’t want anyone who holds us accountable for our own actions and situations. Unfortunately, there are many who capitalize on this and use it to advance themselves.

Recently, Derrick Jaxn, a young Black man who has become known as the self-love ambassador who directs his content directly at Black women, came under fire because of his approach and some hidden dirt that surfaced about him.

As far as the hidden dirt, I will not focus that much on it, because we all have skeletons in our closet that our enemies would love to expose. I am more concerned about motive, character, integrity, and approach. There is absolutely nothing wrong with inspiring and encouraging our women — they definitely need it, with everything they have endured; however, there is a huge difference between speaking to the needs and concerns of women and pandering to their emotional weaknesses.

I am withholding judgment of Derrick because I am not an advocate of attacking and degrading Black men to gain ground with any other social group. For me to go directly at a Black man in a public setting means I have lost all respect for them as a Black man and no longer acknowledge their Black manhood. People like, Charles Barkley, Jason Whitlock, Ray Lewis, etc. fall into this category. With Mr. Jaxn, I have long had some concerns, but I believe the way to combat erroneous behavior is by demonstrating appropriate behavior and not attacking the perpetrator.

I don’t believe that there is a greater advocate for Black women than myself, and I believe that my body of work speaks to that. This is why I can speak candidly about the situation — I have earned the right. I will be the first to say that Black men have and continue to fail our women in general, and I openly acknowledge that, but I also understand why and how. I don’t give them a pass, but I do treat them with understanding.

I don’t believe the way to inspire, encourage, and empower Black women is by attacking Black men. I believe self-love needs to be taught across the board and practiced consistently. I see, far too often, Black men attacking other Black men for the audience it brings. This is unacceptable.

I am not here to air out Derrick’s dirty laundry, the internet seems to be doing a good enough job of that. I am here to challenge everyone who wants to stand on a public platform and confront our issues do so responsibly. If you are able to get paid for the content you create, more power to you — we need more revenue streams within the Black community — but your revenue should not come at the expense of another group that is equally in need of help and guidance. When you do this, you only promote further division, and the one thing the Black woman does not need is to be further distanced from the Black man.

I would ask my brother to find a medium through which he can send his message without attacking, tearing down, and degrading Black men. If you are going to speak of the shortcomings of Black men, you should answer the responsibility of also speaking to the causality. We did not arrive where we are in a vacuum, so let’s always address cause and effect while holding each other accountable. ~ Rick Wallace, Ph.D., Psy.D.
