In Steve Harvey’s Bad Joke About Flint, MI Water Supply, Rick Wallace, Ph.D., Psy.D. addresses Steve Harvey’s bad decision to make a joke about the contaminated water supply in Flint, Michigan.
When I heard that Steve Harvey had once again stepped across the line in addressing an issue that is impacting a part of the United States population that is predominantly Black and impoverished, my initial response was that I would not address it. Steve is no stranger to disrespecting and ignoring the issues and needs of the Black community. He has long since abandoned his Blackness for the sake of being accepted by White mainstream America.
Those who have followed me for a while know that I don’t use the “C” word when referring to Blacks who have sold out, but I do consider Steve Harvey to be a Chief Agent for the other side. His joke about people in Flint, Michigan getting a glass of brown water was more than just poor taste in comedic expression, it was extremely disrespectful.
With all of this being said, Steve Harvey has proven his character and what side he stands on, so we should not put too much of our energy into attempting to get him straight because he is not listening. We would be much better served to put our energy into coming up with viable solutions to many of the enigmatic issues that are plaguing the Black community, including the water crisis in Flint.
A colleague of mine, Dr. Willie Hawkins, has created the technology to address the water crisis in Flint and beyond, but like so many other issues, we have failed to get behind him. I have come up with solid plans to deal with the violence in our communities, the miseducation of our youth and our economic impotency, but it seems that we would rather complain than take action. The time has come to put up or shut up.
Steve Harvey’s bad joke about the Flint water crisis is Steve being Steve, and his response to Black outraged will likely be the same as it has in the past when he offended the Black collective — “I don’t give a damn.” He has said that on at least two different occasions in the past, and nothing has changed. So, let us focus on being a part of the solution because complaining does not produce efficacious results.~ Rick Wallace, Ph.D., Psy.D.
