Darren Wilson, the Ferguson police officer who was not indicted in the shooting death of Michael Brown on August 9th, had a mother who defrauded people out of their hard-earned savings, according to published reports.

The family’s neighbors in St. Peters, a mostly-white suburb in St. Louis, still remember the late Tonya Durso and some were even victims of her cons. They claim that she would win their trust before cleaning them out – to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars – by stealing their identities and taking out huge loans, incurring credit card debts in their names.

Tonya had three children (from at least two different men, it is assumed) and lived with her husband in a large detached bungalow. One neighbor, Mickelle Gordon, a dental assistant said that she was a “charismatic” and “charming” woman. He remembers her well because his brother, Jason, was conned out of tens of thousands of dollars and even some of his pension.

“He used to work lots and saved all his money,” Gordon said. “She said that she was an investor and that she could help him. She got his social security number and stole his identity. She used it to take out loans, credit cards and went through his savings. He never got it back.”

Tonya then turned to Gordon’s mother, Sandy Finney, who was an office manager.

“My husband and I were naïve,” Finney said. “She cleaned us out for at least $30,000 in cash which we didn’t get back.”

Finney added that Tonya would intercept her mail and would apply for pre-approved credit cards that she would then use herself. She got into so much debt that she kept taking out one loan after another to cover a series of debts she had previously incurred. The whole scheme collapsed in February 2001, when Finney was told by her bank that she couldn’t deposit any amount and the authorities were alerted.

Public records show that Tonya pleaded guilty to six counts of forgery and one count of stealing at the 11th Judicial Court in St. Louis.

Tonya died in 2002 under mysterious circumstances and a month after going bankrupt. She was 35 and Darren was about 16.
