Woman Sues United Airlines after Being Arrested for Switching Seats
Reported by Liku Zelleke
The next time you are flying, and especially if it is with United Airlines, make sure you get in your assigned seat and stay put. If you even try to switch seats, it could be the biggest mistake you have ever made in your life. It doesn’t matter if you later comply with instructions to return to your original seat – it will be too late. Just ask Jean Mamakos, because she is suing the company for $5 million.
In March 2013, the 68-year-old was arrested and spent three days in jail after she switched seats on a United Airlines flight from New York to Alaska. En route, she had to switch planes in Seattle after a layover. When the aircraft’s doors had been shut and it was readying for takeoff, she decided to move to an empty row.

That was when flight attendants informed Mamakos that if she wanted to sit in an emergency exit row seat she would need to pay an extra $109 as it was considered to be an upgrade.
“At that point,” Mamakos told reporters,” I decided no, I’m not paying $109 and went back to my seat.”
If she thought this would be the end of the affair, she was soon to find out she was wrong.
“I heard the captain say there is a lady who wants to get off the plane on this flight. So we have to wait. I didn’t know it was me,” she said.
The flight attendants then surrounded her and asked her to exit the plane. She refused.
The police were called and Mamakos was arrested for trespassing after she continued to refuse to leave the airplane because she insisted she had paid thousands of dollars for her ticket all in the hopes of enjoying a ski trip.
“They did handcuff me. There were three policemen who dragged me off the plane,” she said. Her jeans were also ripped during the removal that was described as “violent” by Mamkos’ attorney, Patricia Swicicki.
