 Stand Up for Our Boys

Sean BellThere has been no shortage of stories that vividly express the precarious dilemma that face young black males in this country. Our boys are being systematically destroy from every angle. While white supremacy America would love shift the focus to the killing of blacks by blacks, we understand that same race violence is not exclusive to blacks but is substantial within all races. In fact, 84 percent of homicides committed against whites are committed by other whites. So the black on black crime phenomenon is a myth. Same race violence is simply a cultural and environmental reality.

What is not organic in its existence is the systematic slaughter of young black males by white police officers or other white men acting from a position of authority. Statistics revealed that every week in America at least two black men are killed by white cops. When all white men in functioning in some official security capacity, such as a security officer or neighborhood watchmen, is included in the equation that number increases to one black male being killed every 28 hours.

Some have wondered what has caused the escalation in the numbers. The truth is that the numbers have not escalated as much as many will think. The difference is that technology has caught up with the madness. What was once easily swept under the rug and disputed is now being caught on the video cameras of smart phones. Although the availability of media such as video cameras has not served to motivate a decrease in the violence against blacks by law enforcement, it has offered visible evidence of the brutality that young black men face daily.

With such overwhelming evidence in front of us, we are forced to face the reality of our current position in this country. We can no longer pretend that we are not oppressed by a racist system that is specifically designed to bring about our demise. We can no longer meander through the maze of misinformation and pretend that our reality is not real. The tranquilizing drug of gradualism has placed us in a comatose state in which we are easy targets for annihilation.

The blood of our boys cries out for the streets of inner-city neighborhoods across this country. Trayvon Martin, Amadou Diallo, Jordan Davis, Sean Bell, Eric Gardner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant and so many more have made the ultimate sacrifice for the purpose of awakening a sleeping nation to the reality that we are literally in a war for our lives. We can no longer ask our boys to paint the streets with their blood. We can not longer expect them to make a sacrifice bears them no benefit, but the escape from a world they have yet to truly experience. It is time to stand up and rise to the occasion. It is time to come from behind the computer screen to engage the enigmatic issues that are plaguing our communities. We don’t need more keyboard warriors, we need more soldiers on the front line of education, economic development, black family reconstruction, and more.

We owe each of these men to ensure that they have not shed their blood in vain. It is time to stand up for our boys! ~ Dr. Rick Wallace, Ph.D.
